P36 Antique Japanese Shipping Poster – Osaka Shosen Kaisha (O.S.K.), Osaka–Beppu Route, Pre-War Japan, c. Late 1920s
Historically important Japanese advertising poster issued by Osaka Shosen Kaisha (大阪商船株式会社, O.S.K.), depicting the company’s headquarters and bustling harbor facilities along the Ajigawa River in Tomishima-cho, Kita-ku, Osaka.
Before World War II, Osaka Shosen operated one of Japan’s most popular passenger routes, the Osaka–Beppu line. The cutting-edge liner Kurenai Maru entered service in 1924 and earned the title “Queen of the Seto Inland Sea.” In 1929, the Sumire Maru joined the fleet, enabling twice-daily sailings and ushering in a golden age for the Beppu route. This poster belongs precisely to that celebrated period of expansion and maritime prestige.
The scene shows the Osaka Shosen head office building rising above the Ajigawa River, with large steamships, smaller boats, and intense activity at the pier. The composition vividly captures the atmosphere of “hustle and bustle” at the waterfront during the company’s formative years and its rise as a major shipping power.
Rendered in a refined painterly yōga (Western-style) technique, the image combines fine-art quality with corporate advertising, a hallmark of elite Japanese commercial posters of the 1920s. These works were intended to project scale, reliability, and modernity, and to promote confidence in Japan’s growing passenger shipping network.
This is a museum-level example of pre-war Japanese maritime advertising art, directly connected to the golden age of the Osaka–Beppu route and the early history of Osaka Shosen Kaisha.
