Rare and highly refined Japanese advertising poster promoting Sawanotsuru (澤之鶴) sake, one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious sake breweries. The brand was founded in 1717 in the famous Nada district of Kobe, a region celebrated for producing some of Japan’s finest sake for over three centuries.

This poster dates from pre-war Japan, circa 1920s–1930s (Taishō to early Shōwa period), when breweries commissioned high-quality artistic posters to associate their products with elegance, tradition, and cultural prestige. The composition features a beautifully rendered bijin (beautiful woman) in formal kimono, set against a background of cranes, a powerful symbol in Japanese culture representing longevity, good fortune, and prosperity—perfectly aligned with the brand’s image and heritage.

The painterly realism, soft color gradations, and refined facial expression reflect the influence of yōga (Western-style painting) blended with traditional Japanese aesthetics, a hallmark of elite commercial art from this period. Posters of this quality were displayed in shops and urban settings and were designed not only to advertise sake, but also to elevate the brand through associations with beauty, refinement, and tradition.

Sawanotsuru was already a nationally famous brewery by the early 20th century, and works like this represent the golden age of Japanese commercial art, when advertising, fine art, and cultural identity were closely intertwined.

This is an outstanding example of pre-war Japanese bijin-ga–influenced advertising art and a rare surviving artifact from Japan’s early modern consumer culture.
