P9 Antique Japanese Advertising Poster – Union Beer (Dai Nippon Brewery), c. 1930s
Striking Japanese advertising poster from the early Shōwa period (c. 1930s) promoting Union Beer, produced by Dai Nippon Brewery Co., one of the major brewing companies in pre-war Japan.
The design features a beautifully stylized female face emerging from a deep blue background, rendered in a refined, airbrushed, almost cinematic style. Her gaze, combined with the dramatic cropping and bold color contrast, creates a powerful and highly modern visual impact. A bottle of Union Beer appears to the side, anchoring the composition and clearly identifying the product.
This poster is a superb example of the influence of Art Deco and Western commercial illustration on Japanese graphic design during the interwar period, when advertising imagery became increasingly sophisticated, glamorous, and emotionally engaging.
The balance between refined portraiture, strong typography, and minimalist composition gives this piece a timeless and highly decorative presence.
A rare and highly collectible example of pre-war Japanese advertising art, ideal for collectors, gallery walls, and interiors with an appreciation for graphic design, design history, and early 20th-century Japanese visual culture.
