Elegant and rare vertical-format Japanese advertising poster from the Taishō era (circa 1910s–1920s), promoting the sweets and candy business of Uwatōjima Sōkichi (上渡島荘吉), a regional confectionery manufacturer specializing in sugar-based sweets and candies.

The composition depicts a refined woman and a young girl dressed in colorful kimono, rendered in a delicate, bijin-ga–influenced style. Their calm expressions, elegant posture, and harmonious colors evoke themes of family, care, and gentle refinement—qualities closely associated with traditional Japanese confectionery culture of the period.

Rather than advertising a mass industrial product, this poster represents a local artisanal sweets shop, reflecting the importance of regional producers in early 20th-century Japan. The vertical format and hand-brushed calligraphy text emphasize the blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics with emerging modern commercial design.

The soft pastel background, intricate kimono patterns, and carefully balanced composition make this not only a commercial artifact but also a highly decorative and collectible work of early Japanese graphic art.

A beautiful example of pre-war Japanese advertising, and a rare survivor of local shop promotion from the Taishō period.
