Vintage Japanese advertising poster from the early Shōwa period (circa 1930s) promoting Salon brand cigarettes, issued by the Japanese Government Monopoly Bureau (専売局 / Senbaikyoku).

The composition is dominated by a bold red-orange background and large, confident typography combining katakana and Roman lettering (“サロ” / “Salon”). At the center, a Western-style gentleman relaxes in an armchair while smoking, an image clearly intended to associate the product with modernity, sophistication, and an urban, cosmopolitan lifestyle.

The product is shown in large cylindrical tins, rendered in a playful and imaginative way that turns the packaging into elegant interior spaces. This visual device, together with the strong color field and clean graphic structure, reflects the influence of Art Deco and international advertising trends on Japanese commercial design of the period.

Posters like this were produced under the state tobacco monopoly and represent the golden age of pre-war Japanese consumer advertising, when cigarettes were marketed as symbols of style, leisure, and modern life.
