P46 Antique Japanese Tobacco Advertising Poster – “IKETORA” (雪虎) Cigarettes, Osaka, Pre-War Japan, Late Meiji–Taishō Period, c. 1910s–1920s
Rare and visually striking pre-war Japanese tobacco advertising poster promoting IKETORA cigarettes (雪虎 / IKETORA OSAKA), produced in Osaka during the late Meiji to early Taishō period (circa 1910s–1920s).
The design features a dramatic Western-influenced composition: a gentleman’s hand presenting a richly decorated cigarette pack against a vivid golden-orange background, framed by ornate Art Nouveau–style decoration. The pack itself is detailed with heraldic motifs, winged figures, and classical typography reading “THE BEST CIGARETTES,” reflecting Japan’s early 20th-century fascination with Western luxury branding and modernity.
At the bottom, the text identifies the producer as Iketora, Osaka (雪虎 / IKETORA OSAKA), a historical tobacco brand active in the Kansai region before the war. The printing style, typography, and color palette strongly reflect the transitional period when Japanese commercial art blended Western advertising aesthetics with traditional decorative sensibilities.
This type of poster was made for shop display and public-facing advertising. Surviving examples are now scarce, as they were originally ephemeral commercial materials not intended to be preserved.
