Striking and rare large-format Japanese advertising poster promoting Tsukigetsu / Gekkeikan sake (月桂冠), one of Japan’s most prestigious and historic sake producers, dating from the late Meiji to early Taishō period (circa 1910s–1920s).The composition features an elegant court lady in richly patterned ceremonial kimono, rendered in a soft, painterly yōga (Western-style) technique, standing in an interior setting. In the foreground appears a large bottle of Gekkeikan sake, clearly branded and presented as a luxury, refined product. The figure’s calm, graceful expression and the sumptuous textile patterns emphasize refinement, tradition, and cultural prestige.

The text at the top reads 月桂冠 (Gekkeikan) and includes promotional claims such as protection against spoilage and purity of the sake, reflecting early 20th-century marketing that combined tradition, science, and modern quality assurance.

This poster belongs to the golden age of Japanese commercial art, when Western-style oil painting techniques were widely used in advertising to give products a sense of realism, elegance, and authority. The combination of classical Japanese court imagery with modern branding makes this a particularly powerful and visually rich example of pre-war sake advertising.

Gekkeikan (founded in 1637 in Fushimi, Kyoto) is one of the oldest and most important sake breweries in Japan, and posters of this scale and quality were produced for prominent shop and distributor displays. Surviving examples are rare, especially in this large size.

This is an outstanding museum-level example of pre-war Japanese alcohol advertising, combining fine-art painting, traditional imagery, and early modern commercial design
