P1 Antique Japanese Advertising Poster – Yebisu Beer (ヱビスビール), Man Drinking Beer, Taishō Period, c. 1925

Striking and rare Japanese advertising poster promoting Yebisu Beer (ヱビスビール), one of Japan’s oldest and most iconic beer brands, dating from the Taishō period, circa 1925.

Yebisu Beer was first brewed in 1890 by the Japan Beer Brewery Company (the predecessor of today’s Sapporo Breweries) and quickly became known as a premium beer in Japan. The brand name comes from Ebisu, the traditional god of good fortune, and the beer became so closely associated with its Tokyo brewery that the surrounding area eventually took the name Ebisu (恵比寿) — today one of Tokyo’s most famous districts.

The composition depicts a man enjoying a glass of beer in an open lakeside landscape, with hills and a sailboat in the background. The relaxed pose and scenic setting reflect the visual language of 1920s Japanese advertising, when beer was promoted as a symbol of leisure, comfort, and modern lifestyle.

During this period, beer advertising in Japan became closely linked to the country’s emerging modern consumer culture, using Western-style pictorial realism (yōga) and lifestyle imagery rather than purely informational product display. This poster is a characteristic example of how alcoholic beverages were marketed as symbols of sophistication, relaxation, and contemporary living.
