Kiyochika Kobayashi's "Night at Nihonbashi Bridge" represents a significant achievement within his celebrated "Famous Views of Tokyo" series, an ambitious 93-print project spanning 1876–1881 and issued collaboratively by publishers Matsuki Heikichi and Fukuda Kumajirô. This oban-format work (24.1 × 35.2 cm) exemplifies the artist's distinctive synthesis of Western perspective techniques with traditional Japanese woodblock aesthetics. Originally created in 1881, this 1950 reprint preserves Kobayashi's (1847–1915) masterful rendering of nocturnal urban atmosphere and architectural detail. The series itself marked a pivotal moment in Meiji-era printmaking, establishing new standards for documentary observation and modernist visual language in the medium.
